어원에는 여러 설이 있지만, 'spick'은 쐐기못을 의미하는 'spike'에서, 'span'은 나무 조각을 의미하는 'chip'에서 유래했다는 설이 유력합니다. 즉, 배를 새로 만들 때 쐐기못과 나무 조각을 사용하여 깨끗하게 만드는 것에서 유래했다는 것입니다. (There are several theories about the origin, but one strong theory suggests that 'spick' comes from 'spike', meaning a nail, and 'span' comes from 'chip', meaning a wood chip. That is, it originated from cleaning a ship by using nails and wood chips when it was newly built.)
